Forest, 2020 (installation view)
Tree branches, Mirrors, Leaves
200 cm x 150cm x 245cm
The installation Forest consists of tall tree branches that stretch from floor to ceiling, and scattered leaves covering the ground. Mirrors strategically positioned on three sides create the illusion of an endless forest, enveloping the viewer in an uncanny environment. Due to the arrangement of the trees and the limited space, the installation accommodates only one person at a time, thereby intensifying the intimate connection between the viewer and the artwork.
The warm lighting, hidden among the leaves on the ground, fills the space with a cozy and inviting atmosphere, creating a contrast to the otherwise eerie landscape.
By engaging multiple senses beyond sight, the organic materials (leaves and trees) are accentuated by a strong yet calming scent. The tactile sensation of walking over the crisp leaves, along with the soft sound they produce underfoot, further enhances the sensory experience. This holistic approach to art aims to completely envelop the viewer by simultaneously stimulating various senses.
This installation was inspired by a vivid fever dream I once had. In my dream, I found myself in an endless forest, where only the trunks of enormous trees were illuminated by small fires. The fear of being trapped in the forest, combined with the dread of approaching flames, serves as a powerful motif for the installation.
