The installation Liminal, a colaboration between artists Valia Lolidou and Kyklothymia, consists of a naked female figure in a cold, uncanny space. The floor of the room is covered with white glossy tiles, while the walls are lined with thin nylon that rustles as the viewer passes by. At the center of the room stands the life-sized sculpture in an upright posture.
The term “liminality” describes a transitional or threshold state—a condition of uncertainty and disorientation. The naked female figure stands in a relaxed, contemplative pose, evoking a sense of calm and self-reflection, like bathing after a long day. A moment frozen in time.
The nylon forms a kind of shell around the figure, shielding her from the noise of the outside world. The body is made of polyurethane foam with a silicone skin, created using a molding technique on the body of the model (Koty Gougousi).
The installation Liminal was shown as part of the exhibtion Barely Perceptible, at The Eye Altering Gallery on June 2024, curated by Eleni Giannakouli.
Excrept from the exhibition text:
Barely Perceptible is a duo show by Valia Lolidou and Kyklothymia presented at The Eye Altering Gallery. Their artistic collaboration produces a polyphonic environment where the female body becomes the core of a narrative that unravels the binary, contradictory, even antagonistic relationship between subject and object, inside and outside, self and other.
